This campus facility was undergoing some interior renovations including a new multi-purpose room. Metropolitan Acoustics provided recommendations for the room acoustics and acoustical isolation from the new space to adjacent offices and other noise-sensitive areas.

The main focus of this project was the reverberation time in the Multipurpose Room. This room is on the second floor of the building and does not have full-height walls. It is used for aerobics and other floor-type activities in group settings like yoga. When the reverberation time in a room like this is too high, sound levels will tend to build up to uncomfortably high levels when many people are talking simultaneously or when music is playing. Additionally, a reverberation time that is too high will make speech less intelligible.

We calculated the reverberation times in the Multipurpose Room based on the location, amount, and absorptive characteristics of the interior surfaces and the volume of the room. Our calculations indicated that the reverberation time with the proposed finishes was in exceedance of the pre-determined design goals. Transmission of sound to the offices and conference rooms on the first floor was also an area of concern. We provided specific recommendations and products which would achieve the desired Noise Reduction Coefficient in the Multipurpose room and which would address the sound transmission issues in the other areas of the building.
