Rhode Island Department of Health
Providence, RI

This project consisted of the design and construction of a state-of-the-art, 7-story, 205,000 square foot laboratory and office facility that will serve as the new headquarters for the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) in downtown Providence. RIDOH is set to occupy approximately 90,000 square feet across four floors, with the remaining space designated for commercial tenants. As a member of the design team, Metropolitan Acoustics provided comprehensive acoustic consulting services for both the core-and-shell construction and the customized fit-out of RIDOH’s laboratories and office areas.

For the core-and-shell phase, our services included optimizing room acoustics in communal areas, ensuring effective isolation between tenant spaces and the building core, and implementing noise and vibration control strategies for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. We also conducted testing and analysis to reduce external noise intrusion and ensure compliance with local noise ordinances regarding sound emissions from exterior and louvered mechanical equipment.

For the fit-out phase, our scope focused on enhancing acoustics in meeting and collaboration spaces, designing targeted noise and vibration mitigation solutions for lab and office mechanical systems, and supporting speech privacy throughout RIDOH-occupied areas. The new facility is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy in the fall of 2025.
