Project Type: Laboratories
University of Pennsylvania Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter
Philadelphia, PA
The Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM) is the center for materials research at the University of Pennsylvania. It was established in 1960 as one of the first interdisciplinary academic Materials Research Laboratories in the nation. The center has been funded continuously, first by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), and since 1972, by the National Science Foundation’s Division of Materials Research (NSF-DMR).
The LRSM was slated for new building systems equipment including air handling units, emergency generator, and exhaust systems. There was great concern that sound and vibration transmissions from this new equipment will affect the clarity and calibration of the numerous and sensitive imaging equipment in the laboratories.
Metropolitan Acoustics was engaged for several tasks. Initially, we monitored baseline vibration levels in 15 labs to establish levels before the renovation. We then provided a complete noise and vibration analysis of the new equipment to be added to the building and designed recommendations so that vibration would be at or below pre-renovation levels. Construction administration services were provided to ensure that all equipment was being installed per our specifications. The successfully renovated building is operating with no vibration issues due to the new equipment.
